Alison Nathan

Alison J. Nathan is a circuit judge on the United States Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit. Before that, Nathan served for 10 years as a U.S. District Court Judge for the Southern District of New York. While on the District Court, Nathan chaired the SDNY Security Committee and served on the SDNY Grievance Committee.

Prior to taking the bench, Nathan worked in state government as special counsel to the solicitor general of New York from 2010-11. From 2009-10, she served in the White House Counsel's Office as an Associate White House Counsel and special assistant to the president.

From 2002-06, she was an associate at the law firm Wilmer Cutler Pickering Hale and Dorr in Washington, D.C., and New York as a member of the firm's appellate and Supreme Court litigation practice.

From 2006-08, Nathan was a visiting assistant professor of law at Fordham University Law School, where she taught civil procedure. She was a Fritz Alexander Fellow at New York University School of Law from 2008-09. Nathan continues to teach as an adjunct professor at NYU School of Law and Cornell Law School.

Nathan served as a law clerk for U.S. Supreme Court Justice John Paul Stevens from 2001-02 and for Judge Betty B. Fletcher on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit from 2000 to 2001.
