Course Description

In this seminar, we will examine the concept of authenticity. What does it mean to live an authentic life? When and how do we compromise our true selves, and under what conditions? What is the virtue or value of authenticity? What are threats to an authentic life? When is it problematic to pursue authenticity? Assignments to be determined, but they may include episodes of the TV shows “The Rehearsal”, “Severance”, “Atlanta”, or “Black Mirror”; or the films, “My Dinner With Andre”, “The Truman Show”, “Eighth Grade”, “Sorry to Bother You”, Mulholland Drive”, “Columbus”, “Ingrid Goes West”, or “The Devil & Daniel Johnston”. We will meet on the following five Thursday evenings over the course of the academic year: September 14, October 12, November 16, February 8, and March 14.

Course Notes: The sessions for this Seminar in Ethical Values will occur on these dates from 7:00-9:30pm: 9/14, 10/12, 11/16, 2/8, and 3/14 (location to be announced). Students earn 0 credits at the close of the fall term, and students earn 1 credit at the close of the spring term.
