Course Description

This class examines exchanges and transactions that are traditionally repugnant, and sometimes illegal. Importantly, what constitutes a repugnant transaction is culturally dependent, changing over time and across cultures. For example, typical repugnant transactions in modern western societies include organs, blood, babies, sexual relations, votes for money, and a wide range of other issues. In other cultures and times, however, humans were sold as a matter of course, whereas land was considered inalienable. Students will discuss cases and reading selections from law, economics, philosophy, psychology, and sociology.

Written Work Product

Students will be responsible for submitting a final paper reflecting on the topics and readings covered during the semester. You do not have to address every topic covered in the course, but papers should seek to draw out common themes across the various repugnant transactions covered, rather than address a single repugnant transaction. The final paper will be due via EXPO by noon on December 20th (the day before the last day of the finals period). Length: 2500 words maximum. That's about five single-spaced or ten double-spaced pages. You do not need to do any outside research. I'm looking for your thoughts and reactions on the topics/papers/speakers we discussed. In that sense, think of it more like a take home exam or long reaction paper, rather than a "research paper."

Other Work

In addition to participation, students will be required to make weekly discussion board postings, and present and lead at least one class discussion.
