Course Description

The Law and Economics Colloquium provides a unique opportunity for students to engage with peers, faculty and outside speakers; exchange ideas; and witness, participate in and contribute to legal scholarship. In every other meeting, a guest scholar will present a work-in-progress paper using the methodology of law and economics. These scholars are nationally or internationally renowned experts writing on cutting edge topics. The meetings take place over lunch, and are attended by interested UVA faculty interested. After a short presentation, both class and faculty will engage in Q&A and discussion. The papers presented in the presentation series are challenging and often technical. To prepare students, the class will meet the week before the paper presentation for an intensive workshop on the theoretical and empirical methods used in that paper. This effectively serves as a crash course in various law and economics research methods, such as difference-in-differences, instrumental variables, regression discontinuity, and so forth.
