Course Description

This short course explores the challenges of contemporary military justice, the application of international human rights, and strategies for reform. Topics will include the role of commanders; unlawful command-, presidential-, and congressional-influence; constitutional rights of military personnel; court-martial jurisdiction and offenses; judicial independence; punishment; military commissions; and summary (nonjudicial) proceedings.

Written Work Product

Students will be required to submit a paper via EXPO no later Nov. 25th at noon.

Other Work

For each class session, one or more students will be asked to write a two-page memo responding to the assigned readings and to open the discussion. Please circulate your response memos via the course Canvas page by noon on the day of the class.
