Course Description

This seminar will explore the history of pro bono at law firms, how law firms partner with public interest organizations on pro bono cases, including cases involving impact litigation and policy reform, how law firms measure the impact of their pro bono programs, and the relationship between pro bono and other aspects of law firm practice and culture. The seminar will also examine why lawyers do pro bono, how lawyers and law firms benefit from pro bono programs, and how law firm pro bono professionals use their skills to recruit, retain, and enhance morale through pro bono service. Through selected readings on best practices for administering pro bono programs, and by hearing from selected experts on the topic, students will have the opportunity to learn about how law firm pro bono programs are structured, managed, and funded, and how they can positively impact underserved individuals and communities as pro bono attorneys who practice at large law firms.
