John Zwerling Memorial Fellowship

This one-year fellowship was created to honor John Zwerling, a Vietnam veteran, social activist, and criminal defense attorney, who helped thousands of people over his fifty-year career in the law. He was a pillar of the criminal defense bar in Alexandria, Virginia. The Alexandria Public Defender’s Office will host the Zwerling Fellow for one year, and during that time, the Fellow will carry a misdemeanor caseload and receive training and mentorship from experienced public defenders. The Zwerling Fellowship is funded by UVA Law and members of the private bar. The Mortimer Caplin Public Service Center will solicit applications for the Zwerling Fellowship in January.
