The Black Law Students Association at the University of Virginia School of Law has named U.S. Rep. A. Donald McEachin ’86 the recipient of the inaugural BLSA Alumni Spotlight Award.

He will speak at an awards ceremony Feb. 19 at 5:30 p.m. in the Law School's Caplin Auditorium. A reception will follow. The event is free and open to the public.

McEachin, a Democrat who took office representing Virginia’s 4th Congressional District in 2017, has previously served in the state Senate and House of Delegates.

"We chose Congressman McEachin as our inaugural recipient because we wanted to recognize his commitment to public service," said BLSA President Jianne McDonald. "The criteria for future recipients will be identifying BLSA alumni who are engaged in the community in a way that is uplifting the black community."

McEachin graduated from American University in 1983 before starting law school. At UVA Law, he met his future wife, Colette Wallace McEachin ’85, currently a deputy commonwealth’s attorney in Richmond. While still practicing law, McEachin decided to enter seminary, earning his Master of Divinity from Virginia Union University in 2008.

Founded in 1819, the University of Virginia School of Law is the second-oldest continuously operating law school in the nation. Consistently ranked among the top law schools, Virginia is a world-renowned training ground for distinguished lawyers and public servants, instilling in them a commitment to leadership, integrity and community service.
