Dean Risa Goluboff sent the following message to the University of Virginia School of Law community on Aug. 12 in the wake of protests and violence in Charlottesville:
Dear Law School Community,
I am forwarding you an email from the University about the State of Emergency and the consequent cancellation of University events today. I urge you to take care and please be safe.
I know many of you are deeply distressed, angered, and saddened by what is happening in Charlottesville. I am personally appalled at the attempts by white supremacists to instill fear and provoke violence in our community. The University and Charlottesville have not invited such hatred and repudiate it entirely. It is at odds with our most fundamental values. We respect the freedom of speech, and at the same time we exercise our own freedom to condemn these demonstrations of hatred in the strongest terms.
Again, please stay safe.
