Joseph D. Platania

Joe Platania was elected Charlottesville commonwealth's attorney in 2017 after serving in the office since 2003.  He has also been a cross-designated special assistant U.S. Attorney for the Western District of Virginia since 2008.

Prior to becoming a prosecutor, Platania was an assistant public defender at the Charlottesville-Albemarle Public Defenders Office from 1999-2003. From 1998-99 he was an appellate attorney at the Virginia Capital Representation Resource Center, where he represented Virginia inmates who had been convicted of capital murder and sentenced to death.
 
He graduated from Washington and Lee University School of Law in 1998 and Providence College in 1994.
 
He is President of the Charlottesville-Albemarle Bar Association and currently serves on the Board of the Charlottesville Albemarle Drug Treatment Court.  He is also a member of the 7th District Disciplinary Committee of the Virginia State Bar.
