Course Description

We will examine classic works of dystopian fiction to see what ethical lessons they hold for contemporary American society. Three of the books focus on an alternative American history and three imagine a more general futuristic world. The proposed books are:Sinclair Lewis, It Can’t Happen Here; Philip Roth, The Plot Against America; Philip Dick, The Man in the High Castle; George Orwell, 1984; Margaret Atwood, The Handmaid’s Tale; and Ray Bradbury, Fahrenheit 451.

Course Notes: Meetings will be Sundays from 5-7 at Professor Cohen’s home, with dinner included. The meeting dates will be determined based on the schedules of students enrolled in the seminar.
