Course Description

Topics to be explored in this seminar include but are not limited to: the evolution of American banking regulation from a decentralized, largely unregulated system to a highly centralized system characterized by capital requirements and similar regulations and the role of leverage in bank behavior; securitization and its regulation; the use of financial and bank regulations as an instrument of state control over investment and the economy; government ESG disclosure, its effectiveness and effects; judicial super-deference to financial regulators; the rise and performance of the Federal Reserve as a macroeconomic regulator.

Written Work Product

Regular class preparation and participation, final grade to be based on paper with topic chosen from list provided by instructor or student chosen topic approved by instructor. The paper will be due via EXPO by noon on May 9th (the day before the last day of the final exam period).
