Tickets

Your guests will need tickets for the University Final Exercises on the Lawn, and each graduate will receive six tickets.  The tickets will be distributed in May from the Law School's Student Affairs Office (SL109). Each graduate's tickets will be in an envelope bearing his or her name. If you do not plan to use all of your tickets, you are welcome to give them away to other students or to return them to the Student Affairs Office. However, bear in mind that we have no way to track tickets should any of them disappear.

There will be no standing room only area on the Lawn for guests without tickets.

If the University Final Exercises on the Lawn are moved to JPJ Arena under the severe-weather plan, each graduate is limited to three guest tickets. Guests without tickets may watch the ceremony via live broadcast online or in one of several remote viewing sites across Grounds. To view the University-wide Lawn ceremony online, visit the Office of Major Events Live Webcast page.

No tickets will be required for the Law School Ceremony, and seating will be on a first-come, first-served basis regardless of the location of the ceremony.

Details on the Sunday Ceremonies

At the beginning of the University Final Exercises on the Lawn, law students march together down the Lawn from the gathering point in Rotunda Alley to seats in front of Cabell Hall, where they will, at an appropriate point in the program, be conferred their degrees en masse. Law students will march down the Lawn in two non-alphabetized lines, each led by four faculty marshals, as part of the University's general processional composed of faculty and graduates from all the schools. The path you will take while marching down the Lawn will be closer to the east side of the Lawn than to the west side.

After the University Final Exercises, you should proceed immediately to the Law School.  The quickest way will be to proceed west from the Lawn to the Chapel area, then catch the shuttle to North Grounds via University Hall; the shuttle will let you out on Duffy Boulevard up the hill from the Darden Gatehouse. There is no need to change buses at University Hall. Most buses that are loading in the vicinity of the UVA Chapel will take you to the North Grounds after the Lawn Ceremony. View the signage posted in this area or ask UTS personnel to ensure you get on the correct bus.

When you get to the Law School, please find your seat as soon as possible in front of Clay Hall on Holcombe T. Green Lawn. The seats are arranged alphabetically, and student and staff marshals will be available to assist you. Your name will be taped to the back of your seat. The J.D. graduates are seated first, followed by the joint degree graduates, the LL.M. graduates, and then the S.J.D. graduates. Each graduate will have a copy of the Law School and University programs on his or her chair.

The Law School ceremony will begin promptly at 1:15 p.m., which gives graduates only a short amount of time to get to the Law Grounds from the Lawn ceremony, which typically ends around 12:30. Once the graduates are in their seats on Holcombe T. Green Lawn and the faculty has assembled, the faculty will enter and take their places on the stage. The Charlottesville Brass Quintet will provide music for the processional.

Following remarks by Catherine M. Keating '87 and the presentation of graduation awards, the graduates will be hooded and presented with their ceremonial scrolls. At the appropriate time, student marshals will ask each row of graduates to rise and be hooded by professors just before going on stage. Graduates will be hooded by the first available professor. Each graduate's name will be announced and Dean Goluboff will present the ceremonial scrolls. A professional photographer will be taking pictures of each graduate. After receiving your ceremonial scroll, you should proceed back to your seat while others receive theirs.

At the conclusion of the ceremony, you may join friends and family directly. Please do not forget to return your rented gown and hood before leaving the Holcombe T. Green Lawn! (You may keep the cap and tassel.) Following the ceremony, the Law School Foundation will provide cookies and lemonade in Caplin Pavilion and in Withers-Brown Hall near the Library.

In the event bad weather forces the ceremony inside, the program will be approximately the same.

Photography

Professional photographers will take pictures of each graduate as he/she receives his/her ceremonial scroll and exits the stage at the Law School (the photographers will contact you shortly afterwards).

Video of the Ceremony

A professional two-camera videorecording of the Law School ceremony is available to order on Blu-Ray or standard definition DVD. (Link is forthcoming.)

Parking and Seating Information

Parking

On Saturday and Sunday, graduates and their families and guests may park in most of the lots in the North Grounds area. The following lots will be available: D-2 (with the exception of the visitors' lot next to Slaughter Hall on Sunday); D-3; the lots adjacent to the softball fields below the Law School; the JAG School lot; the S-1 lot in the housing area immediately across from the Law Grounds (but not the F-1 or F-2 lots in other areas of Copeley Hill); the Faulkner Dormitory lot; and the lots at University Hall. The Darden School ceremony will be held at approximately the same time Sunday as the Law School's, and no parking will be available in any of the Darden lots on that day. Additionally, no parking is available at the North Grounds Recreation Center.

Guest Seating for the Lawn Ceremony

Your guests will need tickets for the University- Final Exercises on the Lawn, and each graduate will receive six tickets. Guest seating entrances are located along the sidewalks at Garrett and Rouss/Robertson Halls. Ushers will take tickets at these two locations, then direct guests to the best available seats. Guests are encouraged to be in their seats by 9:15 a.m. in preparation for the procession. There will be no standing room only area on the Lawn for guests without tickets. Guests without tickets may watch the ceremony via live broadcast online or in one of several remote viewing sites across Grounds. Tickets are not required. To view the University-wide Lawn ceremony online, visit the Office of Major Events Live Webcast page

No tickets will be required for the Law School Ceremony, and seating will be on a first-come, first-served basis regardless of the location of the ceremony.

Bus Service

Starting at 7 a.m., the University will provide continuing bus shuttle service between John Paul Jones Arena (JPJ) and the Lawn, stopping on McCormick Road near the UVA Chapel. From 8-11 a.m. the University will also operate a continuous shuttle from the uphill side of Duffy Boulevard (West of Darden Gatehouse) to the UVA Lawn. Thus, graduates and guests can (1) park at JPJ and use shuttle buses to travel to the Lawn, or (2) park in the Law School area and use shuttle buses to get to the Lawn. At the end of the ceremony on the Lawn, graduates should go immediately west from the Lawn to McCormick Road, and proceed toward the UVA Chapel. Most of the buses that are loading on McCormick near the Chapel will take you to the North Grounds by way of John Paul Jones Arena (you do not change buses at JPJ). Several lines are loaded at the Chapel, several of which will go to North Grounds. There is a LARGE sign that splits people into different lines as well as personnel to make sure people get on the correct bus. The buses will unload on Duffy Boulevard up the hill from the Darden Gatehouse, and there is a short walk from there to Holcombe Green Lawn.

Parking Permits for Disabled Persons

A limited number of parking permits for disabled persons will be available for use in the Law School visitors' lot. Please submit a request to Lisa Napier in the Office of Student Affairs, providing the basic facts (who needs it and why) if you require such a permit. The deadline for applying for permits to park in the Law School visitors' lot is Friday, May 5, 2017. Requests received after that date may not be approved. Disabled persons wishing to attend the Lawn Ceremony who have a valid Disabled Parking hangtag or license plate will park in a designated area near the entrance of JPJ. Accommodative shuttles will pick up from the area near the JPJ entrance and drop off on McCormick Road in front of the Special Collections Library. The Law School will have special seating for disabled persons and one companion on the Holcombe Green Lawn. If the ceremony takes place in JPJ Arena, disabled persons may park in the JPJ Arena front lot on a first-come, first-serve basis.
