The End of American Exceptionalism: Threats to Liberal Democracy at Home and Abroad

William A. Galston of the Brookings Institution will describe the internal causes of liberal-democratic weakness such as disappointing economic growth, rising inequality, the growing gap between cities and hinterlands, rapid demographic and cultural changes that deepen divisions between social groups, and the widespread perception that democratic institutions are less representative, trustworthy and effective than they were in the heyday of the recovery from World War Two. Blending history, social science, and political theory, he will attempt to present a more comprehensive account of the forces now besieging Western democracies. By illuminating the distinguishing features of the rising opposition — what we call populism — he will suggest responses to this movement that appear more promising than what democracies have devised thus far. Learn more about the lecture here. Galston will deliver his lecture daily April 24-26. There will be a post-lecture reception April 24 in the Colonnade Club Solarium Room (Pavilion VII on the Lawn).

Racial Justice After Obama: Reconsidering the Goals and Methods for Law Reform

This workshop will bring together a group of interdisciplinary scholars to reexamine the determinants of persistent racial inequality.
