Bruner, Pate Keynote Business Advisory Council Session

Posted September 16, 2005

R. Hew Pate ’87, former Assistant Attorney General for Antitrust, and Bob Bruner, Dean of the Darden School of Business, will speak at the Business Advisory Council’s annual meeting Sept. 23 at the Law School. This year’s conference focuses on mergers and acquisitions, a bellwether of economic activity and an area at the intersection of law and business. Bruner will lead off the session with a review of the research in his recent book, “Deals from Hell.” Participants in the subsequent panel on mergers and acquisitions are leading investment banker Roger Kimmel ’71, Vice Chairman of Rothschild; Fortune 500 client Marschall Smith ’73, General Counsel of Brunswick Corporation; premier M&A attorney Pete Ruegger ’74, Chairman of the Executive Committee, Simpson Thacher & Bartlett; Pate, now a partner at Hunton & Williams; and moderator Professor Bob Sayler. The afternoon session features a discussion on the growth of the Law & Business Program at the School of Law by its director, Professor April Triantis. Joe Gladden ’67, who teaches Governance of the Multi-National Enterprise at the Law School, will also present insights from his career as the former General Counsel for The Coca-Cola Company. Events open to students are listed below.

The Business Advisory Council (BAC) was formed in 1995 to take advantage of the strength of University of Virginia Law School alumni in business, finance, and corporate practice, and currently numbers almost 150 general counsel, executives, and business lawyers. Each fall, members of the BAC are invited to Charlottesville for a substantive program on recent developments in private industry, public policy, and business law.
