Commonfund's Catherine Keating '87 to Deliver Commencement Address
Former JPMorgan Executive Will Speak to Class of 2017 on May 21
Catherine M. Keating ’87, president and CEO of the asset management firm Commonfund, will deliver the commencement address to the University of Virginia School of Law’s Class of 2017 on May 21.
Commonfund manages assets for nonprofit and public sector organizations and develops educational programs to share best practices in investment management. The company currently manages $24.5 billion in assets for hundreds of institutional clients. Keating has led the firm since 2015.
“We are honored and delighted to have Catherine Keating as our commencement speaker,” said Dean Risa Goluboff. “Her leadership and impressive accomplishments, as well as the breadth of her career and service to society, will inspire our students.”
In addition to her work at Commonfund, Keating has gained prominence as a frequent commentator on investment matters in publications such as Businessweek, The Wall Street Journal, Barron’s, The Financial Times and Institutional Investor. She has also been interviewed by CNBC, Fox and Bloomberg TV. American Banker — the trade newspaper for the financial services industry — named Keating one of the most powerful women in finance and banking.
After graduating from the Law School in 1987, Keating worked for global law firm Morgan, Lewis & Bockius as an associate and a partner. In 1996, she joined JPMorgan Chase & Co., serving in several senior management roles there until 2015. In her final position at JPMorgan she oversaw the management of more than $700 billion in investment assets.
Keating also serves on the boards of Santander Holdings USA Inc., the Girl Scouts of Greater New York, the Inner-City Scholarship Fund and the New York Women’s Forum. She previously served on the board of Villanova University for 11 years, including two as chairperson.
The Law School’s graduation ceremony will take place at 1:15 p.m. on May 21 on the front lawn of the Law School, following a morning ceremony at UVA.
