Student-Led Projects

Law students start organizations, run pro bono service projects and lead charitable efforts that not only benefit the community, but also build experience.

Students in groups such as the Volunteer Tax Income Association often put their legal skills to work outside of the classroom. VITA members help low-income and elderly residents of Charlottesville complete their income tax returns on Saturday mornings during tax season. Students receive training on how to provide assistance and are encouraged to come as often as their schedules allow.

The Public Interest Law Association's annual alternative spring break program sends student volunteers across the country to legal aid offices and other efforts needing pro bono assistance.

Numerous student groups have undertaken such public service efforts.
